Saving The Dark

On my trip to Bryce and Zion earlier this month, I decided to hike to the Canyon Overlook in Zion and catch a sunrise.

I arrived at the parking area for the trailhead about two hours before sunrise so I could do the short hike to the overlook. Since I had a little time, I took some photos of the stars from the parking area. A little bit of the Milky Way was visible so I was pretty happy about that. Below is an image I took that very early morning.

Doing some astrophotography that morning also brought back memories of the times I’d photograph stars around Tioga Lake in the Eastern Sierra. It also made me remember a great documentary I saw at Lassen Volcanic National Park about light pollution. The film had been touring around different national parks and I didn’t think I’d get to see it again unless it ended up online…and guess what? It’s online!
