Gigapixel images have been around for a while, but a lot of people don’t know what they are. Basically a gigapixel image is multiple images stitched together to create one large hi definition image. To give you an example of how large the image is, you can create a gigapixel picture of an apartment complex a couple of blocks away, zoom in on one of it’s windowsill, and see something as small as a toothbrush.
Some photographers can do the process manually, but more are opting to use specific devices to get the images done with better results. One such device is called Gigapan. This automated device mounts onto a tripod and holds the camera. When programmed, the Gigapan will move the camera along an axis as it takes multiple images, which will later be stitched together on a computer.
