Back on May 12th, I wrote an entry on my blog regarding using the camera you have and not necessarily worrying about the latest greatest camera to take pictures. I’ve been trying to think of an example that could really solidify that thought…and I think I’ve found it.
In the July issue of Outdoor Photographer, they announced the winners of the 2013 American Landscape Photo Competition (click here to see the winners.) The photos in this year’s competition are really amazing. What I noticed was that first place not only looked beautiful, but the picture wasn’t taken with one of the top of the line cameras. It was taken with a DSLR that is considered by some to be an “entry level” DSLR. Second place was taken with a camera that is considered as close as it gets to a medium format camera without being a medium format camera.
I guess what I’m trying to say here is that the most expensive camera did not win the competition. It did come close, but it does take more than the camera to create a great picture. The composition has to be strong and the lighting needs to be unique as well. It was nice to see that the judges of the competition didn’t solely reflect on the equipment, but more on the photo itself.
Congratulations to the winners! You’re all an inspiration. I hope one day to enter the competition with a photo that can compete on the same level.
