Stephen Tyng Mather

Since it’s the centennial anniversary of the U.S. National Parks, I thought it would be best to bring to light a person who really helped shape the National Park System.

Stephen Tyng Mather was the first director of the National Park Service. During his time as director, he helped increased the numbers of parks and national monuments and established a system of criteria for adding new properties to the federal system.

Below is a photo of a bronze plaque dedicated to this amazing man. I took the photo at Lassen Volcanic National Park, around the Lake Manzanita area. The next time you visit your favorite national park or monument, please remember that it’s because of this man that you can enjoy these beautiful locations.
