My third day in Glacier was met with a little bit of a dilemma: Really rough weather!
Originally the forecast was for partly sunny, but it ended up being extremely rainy and windy, with gusts up to 26 miles an hour! So, I had a choice: Do the hike to Grinnell Glacier as planned or don’t do the hike. I picked to do the hike. Yeah, crazy as it may seem, I did the hike. It was the only day I could do it.
Now that meant photography was going to be really difficult…and it was. I only got good images on the way up to the glacier. When up at the glacier, it was too windy and rainy. Every time I took the lens cap off, BAM, the lens was hit with rain from the strong gusts of wind. Below are two images I took along the trail that ended up in the Glacier gallery and one attempted image up at the glacier that is definitely not going into the gallery. You can see that the image taken at the glacier is soft and slightly blurry from me trying to clean off the water from the lens and there was quite a bit of cloud coverage just above the glacier covering the granite feature called the Garden Wall.
Did I enjoy the hike? Yes, to a degree. It was somewhat fun hiking in the rain, but I could have done without the wind. I also had to hike through a cascade waterfall that was recharged by the rain and fell directly onto the trail, as well as do it again on the return to the trailhead. I was soaked and my boots were flooded. I can’t say I’d like to do the hike like that again.
One day I’ll make it back and do the hike with much better weather, but now it’s time to start thinking of new parks to visit! 🙂
By the way, many of my galleries have been updated on my site. I’ve also changed the National Parks gallery to National Parks and Monuments. The first monument added: Cedar Breaks National Monument! Check it out!
Have a great week everyone!
